He Could Choose Anyone. So Why Does He Keep Coming Back to Me?
What a long-term relationship with a private travel companion in Europe really looks like—and why some clients return for years.
Just as I began thinking about this article, a message appeared on my phone from a client in Norway.
We first met in Shanghai.
We had not seen each other for some time, yet the moment I recognised his name, the distance between Norway, Shanghai and wherever we might meet next suddenly felt remarkably small.
It reminded me how unusual relationships in my world can be.
Sometimes a client’s name appears on my phone after three months. Sometimes after six months, or after so long that I have already assumed we will never see each other again.
The message is often very simple.
I’ll be in Europe next month. Where will you be?
Or:
It has been a long time. I would like to spend a few days with you again.
When I recognise the name on the screen, I smile before I have even opened the message.
Not only because it means another booking. I am pleased that a man who could choose almost anyone has remembered me. That after all the hotels, cities, business trips and people he has encountered since we last met, he wants to return to me.
A first meeting may be the result of curiosity.
The second is a decision.
Working as a private travel companion in Europe is not always about a single evening. I meet some clients repeatedly in different European cities. Sometimes I accompany them to a social event, on a business trip or during a private weekend when they simply do not want to travel alone.
Over time, a relationship develops between us that is difficult to explain to anyone who has never experienced this world.
The Second Time, We Do Not Start From Zero
Before the first meeting, we are two strangers.
I do not know what his voice will sound like, how he treats hotel staff or whether he will be nervous or confident. He does not know what I am like beyond my photographs, whether we will understand each other or whether the chemistry between us will feel natural.
The first few minutes are therefore almost always cautious.
With a client I already know, everything is different.
I know whether he needs to shower and sit quietly for a while after a flight, or whether he wants to open a bottle of wine immediately and tell me everything that has happened since our last meeting. I remember what he drinks, the type of hotel he prefers and whether he would rather reserve the best table in the city or order room service.
I know when he wants company and when he simply needs someone to sit peacefully beside him.
He knows me too. He knows that I can prepare for a formal dinner, an important business meeting or a spontaneous trip. He knows that I will not force him to talk when he is not in the mood. Most importantly, he knows that everything said or experienced between us will remain between us.
When we meet again, we no longer need to discover whether we can trust each other.
We simply continue where we left off.
What Is a Long-Term Relationship With a Companion Really Like?
I often wonder how to describe a long-term relationship between a client and a companion.
It is not a conventional romantic relationship. We do not message each other from morning until night, argue about who forgot to buy milk or become irritated over dishes left in the sink. We do not need to plan a home together, meet each other’s families or decide where we will spend Christmas.
But neither is it a meeting between two complete strangers.
After several trips together, I know his stories, his habits and the way he reacts to stress. I know which subjects make him laugh and which ones he discusses only when he feels completely safe. I may have seen him in situations that even some people from his everyday life have never witnessed.
And he knows parts of me that do not appear in photographs and cannot be described in a profile.
A relationship like this can exist for years, even if we meet only a few times a year. It takes place between airports, hotels, business trips and two lives that would probably never have crossed under ordinary circumstances.
For a few days, we may move through the world like a couple. Then we say goodbye and return to our separate lives.
That does not mean everything we experienced together disappears.
It simply does not require daily attention in order to exist.
Why Clients Return to the Same Travel Companion
A man looking for a luxury travel companion in Europe could choose a different woman for every journey.
A new face brings curiosity and the excitement of the unknown. But it also means starting from the beginning every single time.
Explaining his habits again. Discovering whether they will understand each other. Wondering whether he can rely on her in public, whether she will be discreet and how she will behave around his business partners or friends.
With a woman he already knows, that uncertainty disappears.
He knows that we can spend six hours or an entire weekend together. He knows I can move effortlessly between a dinner, a social event, a business trip and a quiet morning with no plans. He does not need to entertain me constantly or keep checking whether I feel comfortable.
For a man with a demanding schedule, a discreet travel companion for business trips can be someone to whom he does not need to explain everything. She understands his pace, adapts naturally to the programme and knows when to give him space.
He can relax.
Perhaps that is why some clients return. Not because they need to repeat the same experience, but because they want to feel the same sense of ease again.
Luxury is not only a beautiful hotel, a private driver or an expensive dinner.
Luxury is also knowing that the person beside you does not require a complicated explanation.
Can the Affection Be Real?
I believe this is a question some clients never ask out loud.
If a client pays for our time together, can I still genuinely care about him? Can I sincerely feel happy when a particular man contacts me again after a long absence?
Of course I can.
An agreement concerning my time does not erase everything created within it. The price does not determine whether our conversation was honest, whether we genuinely laughed or whether I truly enjoyed being with him.
Payment creates a clear framework. The experiences we share within that framework can still be completely real.
I can care about a client while respecting that our relationship has certain rules. I can look forward to seeing him without expecting daily messages or a shared future. I can value what exists between us without needing to transform it into a conventional relationship.
Perhaps clear boundaries are precisely what allow us to preserve the best parts.
We look forward to seeing each other because we do not wear each other down with everyday life. During our time together, we give each other genuine attention. And when we say goodbye, we do not make promises we may later be unable to keep.
Some Relationships Do Not Need a Name
Sometimes so much time passes between two meetings that I do not know whether we will ever see each other again.
I do not ask why he has not written. I do not check where he is or who he is travelling with. I have my own life, businesses, responsibilities and plans. He has his own world, of which I often know only a small part.
Then, one day, his name appears on my phone again.
After a few messages, we arrange the dates, the city, the flights and the programme. A few weeks later, I step off a plane or walk into a hotel lobby and see a man I may not have seen for several months.
The first few seconds always feel unusual.
We are close, yet for a moment we are also slightly unfamiliar to one another again. Then comes a smile, an embrace or a sentence that picks up something from our previous meeting.
And the distance between us disappears.
We do not need to speak every day for me to remember how I feel beside him. We do not need to be a couple for me to feel genuinely happy to see him again.
Some relationships simply do not fit into conventional definitions.
They are not friendship, romance or business alone. They are a combination of trust, attraction, shared experiences, travel and clear boundaries.
Perhaps that is exactly why they can last for so long.
And when a client contacts me again after months apart, it is not only the prospect of another meeting that makes me happy.
It is the knowledge that, out of all the places and people he could have returned to, he has once again chosen the small world we created together.
Certain identifying details may be adjusted to protect the privacy of everyone involved.
This is only one story. There are many more behind it.
